Gwen was also a member of the a drama group and performed in several plays. Her most enjoyable experience was playing the part of Beneatha in the Raisin of The Sun written by, the late Loraine Hansberry. But ,all of this almost did not materialize for Gwen because it was discovered when Gwen entered the 6th grade that she could barely read. Her sixth grade teacher , a African American woman who had migrated from Mississippi to Gary, Indiana in the early 60’s realize that Gwen was reading on a third grade reading level. Her teacher was afraid that with her so far behind in her reading level to advance her to the next grade level would not benefit her. With the help of her teacher and a strict and enforced after school program her parents created for Gwen she over came her reading disability and fell in love with words. Her love for words now gave her an even greater love for writing. Gwen’s weekly allowance was now used to purchase paper, pencils and pens so could write down every thought that crossed her mind. When she turned 16 her parents allowed her take the South Shore train to Chicago once a month to visit bookstores. Every month Gwen read a different book and she fell in love with writers like Richard Wright, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelo, Gwendolyn Brooks and so many more. Several years passed after Gwen married before she started writing again. It was the love for grandchildren and step grandchildren that prompted her to write Children Books. Gwen likes writing books that children and their parents will love to read.
